Weight reduction in women with infertility

fertilidad-y-sobrepeso.jpg

In May/2014, a study that was published in the journal Fertility and Sterility evaluated 52 overweight women (body mass index greater than 25). They received specific guidance on changes in lifestyle that included reducing caloric intake,  and add physical exercise at least 30 minutes 5 times a week . The aim was to reduce the total body weight by 10 %. The objective was achieved by one-third of patients (this was more common among those who were not obese). The remaining two thirds achieved decreases of weight, but less than 10%. In the group that got the desired objective, there were higher pregnancy rates, both spontaneously and in those made ?? with assisted reproduction technologies.

While this is a small study and no definitive conclusions can be drawn, it is useful to remind us that the reduction of weight is one of the few modifiable risk factors that can be found in reproductive medicine. And it is not only beneficial to the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system, but it also participates in metabolic process and it could impact in fertility outcomes.

Again, a good teamwork (in this case with the department of nutrition) is important for best results.
