Variables predicting a successful IVF

A study about a predictive model of live birth and multiple pregnancy in assisted reproduction treatments was published in this month. An important stenght of this model is that it evaluated a large set of patients, including nearly 290,000 patients who underwent treatment with own eggs and more than 33,000 patients that performed treatment with donor eggs.

According to this model, who already had a previous full-term pregnancy, are more likely to have a live birth in this treatment. Other associated factors, known by everybody, were age and body weight (lower probability of success with increasing age and body mass index). Some other good prognosis variables are a diagnosis of male factor or ovulatory disorders. Finally, on the third attempt, success rate is slightly lower, compared to previous cycles. In the case of egg donation recipients, those who had low ovarian reserve had the best prognosis. Finally, multiple pregnancy rates were associated with the number of embryos transferred in both treatments, with own and with donor oocytes.

While these data do not seem novel and they are consistent with the logic, it is worth knowing that they were corroborated by scientific evidence.
